Rhyker goes Ubuntu Netbook Remix!

Although I did make plans to buy an Apple Macbook. With my recently obtained additional Linux certification, I decided to dig a bit into the Linux scene again.

Since I once upon a time had a MSI Wind Netbook (running Hackintosh / Mac OSX 86), I was curious to learn about how well Linux would run on a Netbook.

The pages I used to do my research (in unsorted order):

All sounded terrific, but … you don’t know until you’ve tried yourself. So using Operating System Virtualisation of VirtualBox on my current PC workstation I’ve tried & tested: Google Chrome OS 0.5.307 Beta, gOs 3.1 , Moblin 2.1 , Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, Kubuntu 10.04Beta2, Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04Beta2 , and EeeBuntu 3 & 4beta.

It was an easy decision! Decided to buy an Asus 1000H and install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 LTS. Not a default hardware configuration one of course, to upgrade the total amount of RAM to 2GB and replace the default 160GB with a 500GB harddrive. This gives me a configuration similar (if not better) than a Macbook at 20% of it’s pricetag, with better battery live, better portability and thanks to Ubuntu … massive open source application support & development. It’s so awesome that I’m selling my workstation and completely migrating to Linux.
