Turned on my computer yesterday and to my great surprise all my desktop icons were gone in Mac OS X Snow. Odd! Didn’t care for it much at first; was hoping it would be temporarily glitch of some sort, but this morning same thing again. So did some digging to find a solution for this nuisance.
Solution ain’t difficult (when you know your way around the Apple / Linux system folders). You have to go into Finder and within your user folder, open:
~/Library/Caches/
find and delete (thus move to trash) this file:
“com.apple.preferencepanes.cache”
Then go into system preferences, so the file can recreate itself, and you’re done; Return from the icons! But so small Right mouse button click / CTRL + mouse click -> Show View Options, and drag the slider to the size your prefer. Also interesting options in this pane are: grid spacing, label position, show icon preview, and keep icons arranged (comparable with “auto arrange” in Windows).
So next to restoring my icons, I’ve also increased usability! Hurray!
