Google Mail has a new look + my enhancements to it

In case you haven’t noticed, Google is changing the way things look in Analytics, Docs, and now also Gmail:

Checkout all the updates at http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/newlook.html

First thing I notice by switching over to the new look, is all my Google Labs plugins have been disabled … not necessarily a bad thing, or is it? A few tweaks I made:

  • enabled a new high resolution background called “The Beach”
  • switched from “comfortable” to “compact” display density (like to use as much screen estate as possible)
  • settings :: general – disabled keyboard shortcuts
  • settings :: chat – enabled google voice conversations and outbound calling
  • settings :: labs – … found the escape hatch to reenable labs: http://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0 … which doesn’t work yet (although it should according to the page).

Meaning … without the labs I cannot enjoy the new look. So for the moment I stick to the old design.

Update 03Jan12: just noticed that google mail forced me onto the new look, but! the listened to the feedback, and as such gmail labs works! Hail Google!
