Vintage Hard Disk NEC D5128H (c.1987) Data Recovery

A few weeks ago I got a call from somebody that was wondering if I really have 23+ years of computer hobby experience …

Oh o!

That’s usually when the interesting questions are being asked after And yup … wasn’t wrong. If I can recover a data from a harddrive from an old computer.

Yes …

I mean usually when I get questions like that, they’re talking about a computer that 10 maybe 15 years old. Well not in this case. We’re talking about a 80286 computer. Still I accepted the challenge as I though I would be able to hook up the hard drive to my multi-HD USB interface … until I received the computer.

Not exactly in a mint condition; rust and dust all over. Definitely not going to turn it on.

Unscrewing

The outer casing has rust all over, and unscrewing it revealed this:

Oh boy … that’s indeed OLD stuff. With two interface cards that I never seen before. Was looking for the harddrive … and found it in the lower tray.

The amount of dust is again unsettling, but that black thing on the side isn’t a fan, it’s the actual motor the drives the harddisk! Oh wow … harddrive museum piece, with an interface I have seen in more than two decades … and definitely not something that I can hook up on USB.
