Going from the latest and greatest in Windows 8, to an eMac manufactured in 2006 with similar problems …

The Real Problem

OS X did boot, but gives funny / distorted display problems; as if the video card is overheating somehow; but the system was just turned on. Resulting in a hangup.

Troubleshoot

Have the install / recovery discs right here, but it will not boot.

Solution to boot from CD problem

• Power down
• Power up
• hold ALT key for 20 seconds before you hear the startup sound
• chose hardware test

Result: no problems found.

Bummer!

But booting to recovery, erasing with disk utility and reinstallation did the trick!
